In Moerwijk Forever we see Moerwijk, a neighbourhood in The Hague, through the eyes of the children who live there. As narrators of their own story, they have pictured their daily activities, dreams and challenges. Over the past year, students from the P. Oosterleeschool and other young people from the neighbourhood photographed places in Moerwijk that are important to them.
The young photographers were guided by the photographers Roos Koole and Jeffrey Grouwstra of KijkLab. In addition to the weekly photography lessons they had, each child was also given a camera to take photographs at home as well. This led to hundreds of special photographs of families, friendships, communities and places in Moerwijk that conceal personal stories about culture, lifestyle and identity.
The result is an intimate insight in what it means to grow up in a neighbourhood known for its social and economic challenges. The photography lessons of KijkLab has provided these young photographers the skills to capture their own daily lives. While a more negative image of Moerwijk often prevails in the media, this selection of photographs mainly expresses hope, resilience and immense creativity.
The photographs presented in the exhibition were selected by some of the children, who got to work as junior curators.
