Today, the Silver Camera is the most prestigious prize for press photography in the Netherlands and winning photographs of the past are engraved in the nation’s memory. Who in the Netherlands does not remember the shocking picture of Pim Fortuyn lying dead after he was shot, the poignant photo of athlete Ellen van Langen crossing the finishing line practically in a trance to win gold at the 1992 Olympics, or the iconic image of the three stars of the VVD leaving by car following a vain attempt to keep Rita Verdonk within the parliamentary party? All Dutch press photographers and foreign photographers working in the Netherlands are eligible to enter the Silver Camera contest for the best news photo of 2008. Entries must be submitted via the Silver Camera website between 10 November and midnight on 21 December and must have been taken after 31 December 2007 and before 1 January 2009. In each category, a professional jury will pick the top three entries during a preparatory selection round. In the final round, to be held on 18 January in the Hague Museum of Photography, the chairs of the professional juries for all the categories will meet together to select the single best news photo of 2008. The name of the winner will then be proclaimed in the course of a festive evening to be held at the Hague Museum of Photography and presented by cabaret artist and television personality Wilfried de Jong. Further details of the entry procedure and general terms and conditions can be found (in Dutch only) on the Silver Camera website.
