While the work of female photographers is often judged in terms of their femininity, whether or not their work is about gender, the work of male photographers often seems to exist independently of their gender. Fotomuseum Den Haag presents work from its own collection by male photographers who consciously or unconsciously play with the idea of masculinity. Their work reveals that this concept cannot be strictly defined.
With works from the collection by Hans Eijkelboom, Samuel Fosso, Erwin Olaf, Paul Blanca, Yasumasa Morimura and Thorsten Brinkmann, among others, this exhibition examines how photographers explore, understand and express their gender. The result is a multifaceted image of what masculinity is and can be.
