I'm So Happy You Are Here offers a new perspective on Japanese photography. While the work of male Japanese photographers has received much attention in the West in recent decades, their female colleagues have remained under the radar until now. This exhibition is the first to offer a large podium to Japanese women photographers and showcases female perspectives on daily life in Japan and Japanese society.
With photographs from the 1950s to the present, I'm So Happy You Are Here features works by more than twenty-five artists from different generations, including Kawauchi Rinko, Isiuchi Miyako and Katayama Mari. Their work is characterised by a high degree of creativity and experimentation. The exhibition includes photographs, installations, videos and photo books.
The exhibition is curated by Lesley A. Martin, Takeuchi Mariko, and Pauline Vermare.
Exhibition organized by Aperture in collaboration with the Rencontres d’Arles, with support from Ishibashi Foundation, Anne Levy Charitable Trust, and 1970 Japan World's Exposition Memorial Fund.
